Chapter Eight

At the kitchen door, Jed took the keys from McKenna’s hand and opened the door, placing his hand low on her back to push her and Daisy inside. As soon as she stepped into her kitchen, McKenna slipped out of her shoes, sighing as she adjusted a sleeping Daisy on her hip. They’d picked her up from Mattie’s house and she just wanted to get Daisy in her own bed and climb into bed herself...preferably with Jed. Oh, she’d given up trying to talk herself out of sleeping with him; they both knew that it was going to happen. They’d said little on the drive home but Jed’s hand, high up on her thigh, under her dress—his thumb rhythmically and deliciously stroking her bare skin, made silent promises.

McKenna licked her lips as heat pooled in her womb and wondered how it would start. After she put Daisy to bed, should she find him or would he find her? Would he come to her room? Did she want it hot and fast, slow and sweet? Should she change, slip into something sexier—did she have something sexy to slip into? She definitely wanted to brush her teeth, McKenna decided as she started to walk across room to the hallway and she walked straight into Jed’s outstretched arm.

“What the hell are you doing?” he demanded, in a hushed whisper.

McKenna looked down at his arm and back to his frowning face. Okay, that wasn’t the look of a man who was desperate to get her naked and panting. “Putting my daughter to bed.”

“Civilians.” Jed looked exasperated. “We’ve been out all night; I’d like to check the place out to make sure that we have no unwanted guests before you go upstairs. Is that okay with you?”

McKenna lifted her chin. “There is no need to get snotty.”

“Honey, I’ve dealt with my father, what felt like a million curious relations, and still haven’t managed to have a decent conversation with Leah’s man.” Jed bent his legs so that he could look her directly in the eye. “I am horny and frustrated and have the biggest set of blue balls in history. I have minimal patience for stupidity right now. You are being threatened, you don’t have an alarm—something that will be rectified—so you are going to stay right where you are while I secure the building.”

“You could’ve just explained that,” McKenna muttered.

“You’re lucky you got that much,” Jed retorted.

As he walked away she noticed that he was holding a big, matte black gun against his leg; gripping it as if it were an extension of his hand or arm. Deadly and dangerous, just like its owner.

“You’d better lock that thing away when Daisy is around,” McKenna told him when he returned to the kitchen, gesturing to his gun nestled in the small of his back.

“If Daisy, or you, ever lays a hand on my weapon then you can safely assume that I’m dead,” Jed told her. He gestured to Daisy, who she’d shifted to her other hip.
